A course I have been longing for: Complex murrini with japanese master Akihiro Ohkama.
The work on the japanese lamp needs some getting used to. The flame shoots straight up instead of pointing away at a 45 degree angle. The use of Shitake glass complicates matters since it flows like water once it is hot.
These are the butterflies we are supposed to produce. The murrini in the above image have been ground and polished. The master only incorporates polished murrini into his beads in order not to introduce any air bubbles.
After a short while I'm getting the hang of it and the glass is actually quite good to work with. Because of its properties it seems a bit quicker to work. I'm quite happy with the result.
The bead above features a butterfly that Akihiro has produced with the murrini techniques demonstrated in the workshop. The photo doesn't do it justice. The detail in the bead is amazing and so is the fact that the clear encasing glass is flawless and without any bubbles. This bead also features complex flower murrini and gold leaf.
Thank you, Aki, for a wonderful insight into your intricate work. And thanks to the Volkmanns for the organisation of the course.
